What are menstrual panties?
Metanoïa menstrual underwear looks like your underwear, but with something extra! They have the unique feature of being made up of several technological layers that allow you to have your period without fear of leaks or feeling wet. What's more, these different layers of fabric are so thin that there's no panty-layer effect.
- The first layer drains blood and sucks up moisture
- The second stores blood
- The last layer is waterproof, preventing blood from seeping through to the underwear
You can find all the information about our technology here.
How does it work?
Menstrual panties are put on in the morning and taken off in the evening, just like normal underwear.
If they are well adapted to your flow, they can last between 10 and 12 hours. There's no need to change and you don't have to think about when and where to change your protection. It saves you mental space. You literally forget you're having your period. That's why menstrual underwear is so practical and comfortable.
Menstrual underwear for light, medium or heavy flow?
The first question you usually ask yourself when trying out menstrual pants is which flow to choose. The best tip is to start with a panty that can cope with the heaviest flow you have on the first day or two. If, for example, you feel that the start of your period is strong, you can take a heavy flow panty for the day and one for the night. Then take a pair of medium-flow panties for the following day. It's advisable to try your underwear on for the first time at home, so that you can assess your different flows with complete peace of mind.
Can I use my panties with other menstrual protection?
Yes, of course you can. Metanoïa's primary mission is to produce underwear to replace current disposable protection. However, everyone has their own pace and if you need additional protection, such as a cup or tampon, you are free to do as you wish.
Can I use my menstrual panties for something other than my period?
Yes, yes and yes again. Menstrual panties are used to retain menstrual blood, but not exclusively. If you have heavy white discharge, bladder weakness or lochia (post-partum), the Metanoïa menstrual pants are there to help you avoid feeling wet. If you use them for any other reason, send us an email at info@bymetanoia.ch to let us know - we'd love to hear from you!
How to look after your menstrual panties: in the washing machine or by hand? You can do both!
You can do both without any problem. However, we recommend that you clean them in the washing machine after each cycle for a more thorough clean. When you remove your panties, rinse them in cold water, gently squeezing the absorbent part to remove any excess blood until the water runs clear. You can then leave them to dry in the open air while you machine them. If your panties dry out in the meantime, that's no problem. When you wash them, put them in with the rest of your washing and select a normal wash programme at 30°C. Our tip: put them in a washing net to keep them even longer. When you clean it by hand, it's important to use a mild soap and to insist on the absorbent part. Rinse well and leave to dry in the open air.
Summary of steps
What to do :
- Rinse your panties after use
- Use only a mild soap or mild detergent
- Choose a washing programme at 30°C or insist on the absorbent part when washing by hand
- Leave to air dry
- Best of all, put it in a washing machine net to keep it even longer
Do not use :
- Do not use greasy soap or Marseille soap
- Do not use fabric softener
- Do not tumble dry
Cleaning before first use
It's essential to remember that before using your menstrual underwear for the first time, you must clean them. You can clean them by hand with a mild soap or in the washing machine. However, if you clean them by hand, it's essential to soak them thoroughly in water, as this activates the absorbency of the fabric. So your panties are ready to support you all day long!
